Dario Franchitti winning 91st Indy 500Sunday will be the 93rd running of the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” the Indianapolis 500. When you are talking about a 500 mile race weather plays a very large role and I have been to my share of Indy 500 and had to deal with a wide variety of weather.

In the picture shown on the left is Dario Franchitti winning the 2007, rain shortened, race. I was there last year and the rain was delayed early on with showers then more rain arrived with 34 laps left and that put an official end to the race.

2004_indy_500.jpgAnother year where weather stopped the race that I remember vividly was the 2004 race when severe weather stopped the race 20 laps short. Buddy Rice won that year but a tornado warning was issued for Marion county, where Indianapolis is located. They told everyone to leave the track and as we left and headed back to my hometown of Martinsville, IN we got caught in one of these tornadoes. In all, 5 tornadoes were produced by this storm. We experienced the tornado on State Road 37 just north of Southport Rd near Interstate 465.

1997 the 81st Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway over three days, May 25-27, 1997. It was originally scheduled Sunday, May 25, however, rain washed out all activities for the day. The race was started on Monday May 26, but rain halted the race after only 15 laps. On Tuesday May 27, the race resumed, and was run to completion.

For the rest of the week as we get ready for the 500 I am going to put together a forecast for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Race Day on Sunday.
