What a difference 12 hours can make. I have been watching the development of this storm on the computer models all week. Earlier in the week, it appeared as if most of the viewing area I work in around Rochester, NY would see several inches of snow from the current winter storm. As the days kept getting closer and closer to the weekend the snow amounts kept getting less and less. Then on Friday, it appeared that the earlier models were wrong as the storm was going to me more south and we would see 1 to maybe 3 inches for most of western & central NY, and the heaviest of the snow into Pennsylvania.
To wake up on Saturday to see Winter Weather Advisory for most of western & central New York was not what I wanted to see. It appears now that the winter storm will still move through southern Ohio this morning, through southern Pennsylvania tonight and then be off the southern New England coast by Sunday morning. There looks to be enough moisture and mid level support to spread more snow than once thought north towards Rochester, Syracuse and Albany. Even New York City could get 2 to 4 inches of snow.

The worst of this storm will be from Cleveland, OH through my old stomping grounds of Erie, PA through northern Pennsylvania and extreme southern New York, where the heaviest of snow will fall, then into southern New England like Hartford, CT and Boston, MA where 4 to 8 inches could fall with some places getting upwards of a foot. These are also the areas under a Winter Storm Warning and at times snowfall rates could be 1 to 2 inches an hour. This could result in a quick cover of snow on roads and extremely poor travel. Flights delays and cancellations can also be expected with the snow.
To the south of the winter storm, a thin corridor of a wintry mix will spread along the Mason-Dixon line. Some freezing rain and sleet will fall and cause treacherous travel in these area as well.

It is accumulating quite rapidly here in Erie, Pennsylvania! Your models were correct! Some spots are nearly five feet high from shoveling the walks downtown here.
But it is hauntingly beautiful in the quiet white solitude when you are outdoors.
Happy 2009 Brian and to your family as well.
