Update11:45 pm EDT: It appears there was an AP story that changed that number to only 20% remained if I can find the story I will post it. I have to agree with others that the early surge through out the day may have changed the minds of many who were thinking of staying…
(Hat tip: Weather Nerd & Houblog) Ike IS a dangerous storm, it WILL be deadly. Now, if these reports are true that only 60% of Galveston Island’s 60,000 residents heeded warnings and evacuated then it could be even more deadly. I think Brendan Loy, Pajamas Media “Weather Nerd” asks a question we are all thinking:
Why the hell didn’t these people leave? I’m speaking of Galveston specifically — the other places, I understand a bit more, but 40% of people on Galveston Island refusing to evacuate?? It makes me angry. Scared for them, yes, but also, angry. Honestly.
After looking a little disorganized and refusing to strengthen forecast after forecast it appears that Ike is getting its act together about 6 to 8 hours before landfall. Looking at current satellite image, Ike is looking better organized this storm is going to be bad. We will be hearing about Ike like we hear about Katrina. My fear is when this storm is as bad as we fear what will the fall-out be? Anyway, right now my prayers go out to all of those who are in the path of this monster storm. I may never know why anyone made the choice to stay but I hope and pray for the best.
