UPDATE 08/27/08: Greetings to everyone looking for the 2008-2009 Winter forecast. Feel free to leave questions and I will do my best to answer. I can tell you the Old Farmer’s Almanac is usually one of the earliest ones, in fact, this year they were earlier than their two previous years. This is not MY forecast, nor do I endorse this forecast, but I know many people like the Old Farmer’s Almanac and the Farmers’ Almanac forecasts so I post them.
Every year at this time I go looking for all Winter forecast I can find and then post them here. Kind of a one stop shop if you will. Eventually I will put out my own forecast for the region I am living and working in. The last 3 years it has been in Erie, PA this year I am Rochester, NY.
I am currently and actively blogging the active 2008 tropical season. Please visit my most recent posts on Gustav and the other tropical systems.

I live in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The last few winters here have been appallingly warm and uneventful. I love the snow and cold and was wondering what the forecasts say for my neck of the woods. Will we have the snow and cold that we have been denied for so many years or do I have to look forward to yet another warm winter with barely any snow and a green and warm Christmas?

Well it is still to far out to give you a forecast. It would be irresponsible to even try. Keep an eye on the forecast look at how the trend is going. Where in Indiana are you getting married? I am from Indiana and I could give you someone to get in contact with when the date gets closer. Also my email is wxman.com gmail.com if you have more questions

i’m thinking of buying a generator for emergencys. I would like to know if you have any idea as to what this years winter will be like (2009) generators cost alot but I hate to not buy one and then be in a situation to where i will be kicking myself as I throw the food out cause i wasn’t ready.

Vince63 – It’s hard to say, not having a great understanding of California weather I can’t tell you yes you should or no you shouldn’t get the generator. If you are really concern then maybe you should go with your gut. I bet having a generator would be a good tool to have for all types of situations in California.
The overall consensus is that this winter will feature an El Nino but should be in the weak to moderate category. The best advice would be to contact one of your local meteorologist and see what they think and also look at past years where the El Nino’s were in the same category.
Brenda – Sorry for the delay on getting back with you. Just so you know the forecasts I have posted whether it’s the NOAA, AccuWeather or the Old Farmer’s Almanac Forecast are not mine. I am just sharing what I find. I do not have my own long range seasonal forecast. Long range forecast is not one of my strengths but I think it is important for people to see all the info out there. Also It may be a good idea to contact one of your local meteorologist and see what they think. I know as a television meteorologist I appreciate comments and questions from viewers and am more than willing to help when I can.
LUCIA – Like I told Brenda, I honestly don’t know. Again these forecasts are not mine but from other sources and I am still trying to get a good idea for Western New York and Rochester where I live and look. Same advice I gave Brenda. Once thing I can tell you is that I have a feeling that given the El Nino pattern we may see that there could be more storm systems up the east coast and New England and that would increase the likelihood of getting snow storms too.
