NASCAR 2013 DAYTONA 500 FORECAST

NASCAR 2013 Daytona 500: Rain Chances Increase for the Weekend

0

Unlike other sports, NASCAR starts its season with their premiere event, the Daytona 500. Weather is always a concern for NASCAR, but of all the weather forecasts I do during the year, this is the most important . In the 54-year history of the Great American Race, the Daytona 500 has only ran once on a Monday and that was last year. The question is, will history repeat itself?

Weather forecast for today’s Budweiser Duel is quite nice. Plenty of sunshine with temperatures this afternoon in the low to mid 70s.

Rain chances are on the increase for Daytona International Speedway Friday through Sunday. Friday’s rain threat is minimum as a weak surface disturbance passes by late in the day and into the evening. I think just a slight chance of an isolated shower or thunderstorm Friday afternoon and evening, but shouldn’t impact the Camping World Truck Series race.

Saturday, a cold front presses closer to north and central Florida during the afternoon. Like Friday, there is a slight chance of an afternoon shower or even an isolated thunderstorm. Although the chance of rain is worth mentioning, Saturday afternoon’s Nationwide Series race should remain mostly dry with just a very small chance of a delay.

Cold front slides through and stalls close to Daytona International Speedway on Sunday. Rain chances have increased over the last few days, enough to mention the chance of a shower during the Great American race. This worries me some, but at this point I am confident in thinking we will see the 55th running of the Daytona 500 on Sunday. I am stopping short of saying the race is totally dry. Stalled cold fronts that close to an event always make me nervous. Couple miles shift north or south with these boundaries could mean the difference between a totally dry race, and a rain delayed race. Probability of seeing a race on Sunday, better than 70%.

NASCAR At Daytona International Speedway 2013: Rain Ends, Much Colder this Weekend

0

As we prepare for the start of the 2013 NASCAR season, many remember how the 2012 season started, with rain. The last few days have been wet across Daytona International speedway, but weather is expected to improve the rest of today and as we go into the weekend.

The only concern we have this weekend is the passage of a cold front Saturday afternoon. Clouds will increase and so will the winds as we go into Saturday afternoon and evening. Winds will be out of the west-northwest and could gust to near and at times over twenty-five miles per hour.

With the front passage it will turn colder for Saturday night and the Sprint Unlimited. Temperatures will fall into the low 50s and just before the race during the late afternoon and early evening There is just the slightest chance of of a quick passing isolated shower with the front but right now I think most of Saturday is dry and not really worried about any rain delays at this point.

Clouds will linger after the cold front on Saturday, it will be gray through the morning but some clearing will take place in the afternoon. The main concern still remains the chance of rain Sunday with a disturbance coming out of the Gulf of Mexico.

I posted an image above from one of the computer models. All the forecast models have been consistent, bringing most of the moisture into northern Florida. As you can see where the “X” is located this is very close to Daytona International Speedway. These kinds of forecasts can go either way. There is not enough confidence to say, “Yes this is a washout” and honestly I don’t believe it is. I am just concerned that showers will move in towards the middle or end of the race and possibly shorten it.

Unlike some systems where rain moves through and it is over, once rain arrives with scenarios like these it stays around for some time and is slow to exit.

There are no weather concerns for Friday or Saturday. The weather story for Friday are very warm temperatures and strong gusty winds. Highs will reach the mid 80s and winds out of the southwest could gust up to thirty miles per hour.

Cold front sweeps across Florida Friday night and early Saturday morning. Its passing will be quick but not before it puts down rain across the area overnight. Rain and front are gone by Saturday morning but it will be noticeably cooler as highs only reach the mid 60s.

The main focus for this forecast has turned to Sunday afternoon. What once looked like a dry forecast just two days ago has become increasingly wet and unsettled for Sunday afternoon and evening. Moisture will spread in from the Gulf of Mexico as the same cold front that moved through Friday night begins to come back and become a warm front. This boundary will creep across north Florida bringing with it an increase threat of rain Sunday afternoon and evening. Rain that forms along a warm front usually is more wide spread and last longer than showers associated with a quick moving cold front.

Based on the current information, I am still optimistic for Sunday but keep in mind I’m cautiously optimistic. The forecast over the last thirty-six hour has grown increasingly pessimistic and wet for Sunday. I can’t say, “we won’t see rain on Sunday,” but I also can’t say, “The Daytona 500 will be a wash.” There’s just not enough information available to make that call. Again, I remain cautiously optimistic and if you plan on going the the Great American Race on Sunday, I’d prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

With the very warm air in place a few isolated showers have started to pop up this afternoon around Daytona International Speedway. The threat is low but showers have come awfully close to the track earlier today. The forecast is mostly dry for this afternoon 150’s but there could be a few drops.

The forecast became a little more complicated by the possibility of a few light rain showers on Sunday. A disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico will spread clouds and more moisture over northern Florida Sunday afternoon. The forecast models are beginning to show more of a threat of rain Sunday afternoon. At this time I am just mentioning a low threat of an isolated shower around. In this scenario most of the time and area looks to remain dry but as we have seen it only takes one rain shower to cause delays.

The rest of the forecast remains good for Friday and Saturday for the Camping World Truck Race and the Nationwide race on Saturday. Temperatures will remain warm for Friday as highs get into mid 80s with cooler temperatures on Saturday with highs near 70.

Showers are possible today at Daytona International Speedway. Best time will be from about mid morning into the early afternoon. They will be widely scattered so I expect rain to be a threat especially during qualifying. Will rain definitely wash out qualifying? I can’t say that, especially when talking about scattered showers and possible thunderstorms but the possibility of rain is better than what had on Friday.

The other concern for drivers and teams will be the wind. With a cold front working across Florida the winds will increase. Sustained winds will be from 10 to 20 mph, and gusting to near 30 mph. The winds will start out of the south-southwest but shift to more west-southwest around midday.

It will be a very busy day for me and my family but I will try to update as often as I can.

Budweiser Shootout weather forecast at Daytona International Speedway this evening is looking good. There is a small chance of an isolated shower or two but I don’t expect any activity to cause problems this evening. Watching a cold front that is expected to move through Florida Sunday morning into early afternoon. This is the best chance for rain this weekend. It also coinsides with Sprint Cup qualifying. If it rains the weather improves later in the afternoon and Monday and Tuesday look like beautiful days with plenty of sunshine and cool, comfortable temperatures.

Rain showers that were south of Daytona International Speeday Friday evening will eventually begin to work back north Friday night and during the day Saturday. The reason for this is because a storm system passing to the north and will lift a stalled boundary bring the rain with it back over the track Saturday morning and afternoon. This will continue to keep the threat of rain around for Daytona 500 practice Saturday morning and afternoon.

Saturday night the threat of rain begins to decrease. There is still a chance of a few scattered or isolated showers but it looks dry for Saturday evening. A cold front will move through Sunday, keeping  a threat of rain and possible storms for the time of Daytona 500 qualifying.
