Food City 500

BRISTOL NASCAR WEATHER FORECAST

2014 NASCAR at Bristol Motor Speedway Race Day Weather Forecast: It’s Gonna Rain

The weather forecast for the Sprint Cup Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway remains as wet as it has been all week. Storm system will spread rain across east Tennessee Sunday morning and keep the rain around for most of the day and even into the afternoon.

The above image is an animated forecast map from 8 a.m. EST Sunday until midnight on Monday. Rain arrives between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. EST and continues through the morning and into the afternoon. Some of the forecast models I’ve looked at try to break some of the rain up as we go into late afternoon and evening. While some of the showers are possible to become more broken and scattered, I feel there is just too much moisture in place today to see any racing at Bristol, that includes racing at night.

CAN WE RACE SUNDAY? My odds of seeing any racing on the track today at Bristol Motor Speedway continue to hover near 20 to 25 percent. While there are some forecast floating around out there that has the rain drying out late afternoon and into the evening, I just think there are too many things working against NASCAR racing today and even tonight.

It all comes down to if we see any breaks in the rain as we go into the afternoon and evening. If any of these potential windows are large enough for the Air Titan to dry the track and get the cars racing. If by some chance NASCAR manages to get a large window, will it be open long enough after drying to get an official race (making it to halfway or beyond). It feels like too many things have to go right for NASCAR to be able to race today at Bristol Motor Speedway.

BUT BRISTOL HAS LIGHTS, CAN WE RACE AT NIGHT? As I said above, even when I factor in the lights and how quick Air Titan can dry the track, I am just not feeling confident that we get a long enough window to race to halfway or beyond. That’s if we see a window to begin with. Even if the steady rain ends in the afternoon and evening there is a good possibility that drizzle will set up in the valleys keeping everything wet for most of the evening and night.

YOU’RE A METEOROLOGIST, YOU CAN BE WRONG: This is very true, my forecast could be wrong. Many meteorologists, including myself, were wrong about the rain we had in Phoenix just two weeks ago. The difference between then and now is the kind of weather system we are going to see. In Phoenix, we had a cold front that was going to spark showers and storms near and around the track. We got lucky that most of the rain formed around the track but never hitting until the second half of the Nationwide race.

I’ve talked with other meteorologist like my NASCAR weather colleague on Twitter @RaceWeather and looked at the National Weather Service forecast and there is just too much agreement that rain is working against NASCAR racing today and tonight.

SHOULD I GO TO THE RACE SUNDAY OR MONDAY? I get this question a lot in situations like this and I honestly can’t tell someone what they should do. A lot of fans will drive two to even four hours, if not more, to see the NASCAR race at Bristol. If it were me and I had a long drive, I’d monitor the weather and radar during the morning. Maybe even drive to a  halfway point and see what is going on. I’d wait to see if any decision is made earlier by either NASCAR or meteorologists forecasting the weather.

While I appreciate all those who support my NASCAR weather forecasting, I would tell anyone to also look at other forecasts from reliable sources. Get as much information you can and then make the best informed decision you can.

WHAT DOES MONDAY’S FORECAST LOOK LIKE? While Monday has the chance of rain and yes even some snow for Bristol Motor Speedway on Monday, most of this activity is expected in the morning. If NASCAR is forced to postpone the race to Monday then the scheduled start time for the Food City 500 is noon on Monday. Looking at the forecast the threat of rain decreases going into the afternoon and I feel that this would be the earliest time to get all of the race completed.

NASCAR 2013 Bristol Motor Speedway Race Day Weather Forecast

0

Does the NASCAR Sprint Cup series race today at Bristol Motor Speedway? Yes I believe they do, but not without the threat of a couple of rain showers and the possibility of a rain delay or two. Stall front will be draped across the Tennessee Valley today. Along and near this boundary will be scattered showers. While it is hard to know exactly when showers will form and where they will go, it appears by most forecast data that a good deal of activity takes place this morning and then becoming more broken and scattered as we go into the afternoon and evening. This give me enough confidence to say we see a race today at Bristol Motor Speedway and think the odds of seeing a complete race is 60 to 70 percent.

2012 Bristol Motor Speedway NASCAR Race Day Weather Update: Do We Race This Afteroon?

1

FORECAST UPDATE SUNDAY 11 AM EDT (3/17/2012):

As discussed in my previous forecast, we are seeing the rain beginning to break up and could see the rain come to an end across the area between noon and 1 pm. Do we race this afternoon? I say yes, and depending on when the light rain and drizzle finally ends we could race close to the scheduled time of 1 pm. If it takes longer to dry then there could be a slight delay…

2012 Bristol Motor Speedway NASCAR Race Day Weather Forecast: Morning Rain, Afternoon Racing

4

FORECAST UPDATE SUNDAY 5 AM EDT (3/17/2012):

Showers moved into northeast Tennessee, including Bristol Motor Speedway, early this morning. The showers were steady and light with the bulk of the rain expected to fall during the early morning hours. Steadiest of the rain should begin to come to an end between 6 am and 8 am.

By mid to late morning there could be a few lingering pockets of light rain and drizzle as drier air tries to work in behind the departing system. Midday and early afternoon most of the activity should push off to the east-northeast and begin to dry out with mostly cloudy skies and some partial clearing.

How will all of this affect the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway? I stayed up late and into the early morning hours watching this area of rain as it moved slowly into northeast Tennessee. Depending on how long it takes NASCAR to dry the track I think we still get this race in during the afternoon. I’d say it is better than 60% that we get the race started on time and better than 80% we get the race in today. I will update if anything changes this morning and afternoon.

FORECAST UPDATE SATURDAY 7:00 AM EDT (3/15/2012):

Although there are scattered showers in the forecast this weekend for Bristol Motor Speedway, the majority of the time should be dry and rain free. This doesn’t mean a shower won’t threaten and or even hit the track, it just means because the showers and storms will be scattered across the area, many could miss the track than hit it.

Best chance for widespread scattered showers and storms will be Saturday afternoon when we get into the heating of the day. Best time would be from 2 p.m. EDT until 8 p.m. EDT in the evening. Bristol has lights, but I don’t know if NASCAR would move the Nationwide race to Saturday night if showers were to delay or postpone. I guess it is always an option.

Sunday’s forecast is a little better, there’s still the possibility of some scattered showers developing in the afternoon but they don’t look to be as widespread as Saturday.

Both Saturday and Sunday will feature partly sunny skies, and very warm temperatures for mid March. High temperatures in the afternoon will be in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees.

FORECAST UPDATE FRIDAY 3:30 PM EDT (3/15/2012):

Showers have been forming through central Tennessee this afternoon. It looks like they should be able to get Sprint Cup qualifying in, but the K&N Pro Series East race later this evening could be dealing with some rain.

Forecast overall is relatively unchanged. There will be dry time along with the threat of scattered showers and storms in the afternoon. The best chance for rain appears to be Saturday. Similar to what we saw today but as you may have noticed rain was NOT a factor in practice or qualifying. In the afternoon on Saturday, scattered showers and storms are expected to form, the question is when and where. If they form all around Bristol Motor Speedway and don’t hit the track then that is a win for NASCAR. Just keep in mind it only takes one lone shower or storm to move over the track to cause problems and delays.

For Sunday, the forecast is a little better. Isolated and scattered showers or storms are still possible in the afternoon. I will need to keep an eye on the radar through out the race but I feel like NASCAR should be able to get the Food City 500 in on Sunday.

FORECAST UPDATE THURSDAY 9PM EDT (3/15/2012):

These are the toughest forecasts I do each season. We have unseasonably warm air in place with lots of low level moisture. You combine that with weak upper level disturbances moving through and we increase the threat of rain, especially in the afternoon. This pattern is more like a late spring to early summer with scattered and pop showers and storms developing in the afternoon.

The best chance for rain is Friday afternoon as a disturbance moves over eastern Tennessee. There is a high probability that Nationwide and Sprint Cup practices could get washed out along with Cup qualifying if these storms and showers become very wide spread during the midday and early afternoon. Showers and storms will continue into Friday evening.

For Saturday, rain is not as wide spread and becomes more scattered but still remains a threat. There should be plenty of dry time but what makes this forecast so challenging is you never know when or where one of these pop-up storms will form and move during the day. Storms and showers will develop during the afternoon on Saturday. Rain activity will be scattered and this is why there is an equal chance of seeing a shower as there is NOT seeing a shower over Bristol Motor Speedway. This will be a forecast that will change with every hour and minute.

Sunday the threat of rain decreases as high pressure tries to build in but isolated pop up storms are still a small threat during the afternoon. This is the best day of the three but it only takes on shower or storm to move over the track to cause delays and problems. Will have another update early Friday morning.

FORECAST UPDATE WEDNESDAY 6PM ET (3/14/2012):
Just because the forecast above shows rain and lightning doesn’t mean the entire weekend is a washout. The best chance of rain and storms looks to be Thursday into Friday. Saturday and Sunday there could be pop up to scattered showers around but there will be a lot of dry time. This doesn’t mean a shower won’t hit Bristol Motor Speedway over the weekend but the likelihood is small.

FORECAST DISCUSSION SUNDAY 9 AM  EDT:

Race day is here and for the last 3 days I have been tweaking the forecast. Trying my best to figure out when the rain would arrive and if and how it could impact today’s Sprint Cup race. We are now just a few hours away from the drop of the green flag and although rain may hold off at the start not sure the rain will hold off through the entire race. If I’m a crew chief, as I said Friday, I’ve got a rain shortened contingency.

8:45am EDT Radar Image of Western & Eastern TN, Rain was 275 miles away mainly moving north.

I am estimating the rain could arrive sometime between 4pm and 6pm. That means the race may not be over by the time the first drops arrive.A few isolated showers could form ahead of the main rain shield but really haven’t seen that trend on radar this morning. When and if the rain comes and the race is not over this is not going to be a small quick shower as you can see from the Radar above. There is a lot of rain to the west and to the south of Eastern Tennessee.

One of the biggest reasons the rain holds off is because of downsloping winds over the mountains. When hair sinks and comes down from a higher elevation it dries so that should slow the onset of rain for most of the afternoon.

I will have updates through the race on my Twitter account @NASCAR_WXMAN I will show radar and give est. times of arrival the best I can. 1:13pm is the estimated time for green flag drop. Worst case scenario we have about 3 hours before the first rain arrives but let’s hope it arrives on the later side of my 4-6 PM window.
