RED FLAG FORECAST UPDATE 6:00 PM EST:

It just took one brief downpour to put NASCAR’s final race under an extended red flag. Looking at radar, there’s not much out there. If you follow me here or on Twitter you’ve heard me say, “It’s not the rain you see but the rain you don’t that you have to worry about” and this is the case this evening.

Personally I think once we get this race restarted we are good. The odds of an another isolated shower to hit Homestead-Miami Speedway is around 10 to 20 percent. I don’t feel like we see another one but that doesn’t mean we won’t. I’ll keep you updated.

SUNDAY EVENING FORECAST:
6:00 p.m EST
Sprint Cup  Race  – Patchy Clouds, isolated threat of a shower – temp: 76
7:00 p.m EST
Sprint Cup Race –   Patchy Clouds, isolated threat of a shower  – temp: 77

Sprint Cup Race –   Patchy Clouds, isolated threat of a shower  – temp: 77

FORECAST UPDATE Sunday 3:30 AM EST:

Hard to believe the NASCAR season is almost over, but the 2011 season comes down to one race Homestead-Miami Speedway. We have heard all week “nothing will stand in the way” of Tony Stewart or Carl Edwards when it comes to them winning 2011 Sprint Cup. The only thing that could “stand in their way” is something neither Edwards or Stewart can control, the weather.

Mother Nature has had some fun with NASCAR this season and she would be a very unwelcomed guest if she brought rain to NASCAR’s final party. It appears she will end the season being a fan of NASCAR. The forecast for Sunday looks similar to what we saw Saturday at Homestead-Miami. Clouds, and sunshine with gusty winds. Temperatures will be comfortable near 80 to mid 75.

There is just a small chance of an isolated shower. Winds have been coming onshore all weekend, and we have seen, on occasion, a few small showers form from this flow off the Atlantic. This is why I mention an isolated threat of showers. The threat is very low and seems very unlikely, but it still needs to be mention.

Thank you all for visiting my site each and every week, and if you are new, welcome and please feel free to come back in 2012. Looking at my web stats, 2011 was my best season ever for visitors and I am truly flattered and grateful, again thank you. I do this cause I love weather and I love the sport of NASCAR. I feel it is important to all fans, whether your going to the track that weekend or just staying at home, to have the best most accurate weather forecast available. I am just like you, a fan and whether you are blocking off a whole afternoon to watch a race or spending hundreds of dollars to support the sport you love you need to know what the weather is going to be like and you need it in a way so you can make the best decision you can. Whether it is time or money you are making an investment and we all want to get the most out of our investment. That is what I think about when I put each of my forecasts together. I don’t get every forecast right and those are tough weeks cause I feel like I let a lot of people down. It just motivates me to  be better the next week.

I plan on making changes to this site in 2012. I am open to suggestions on what you would like to see added or removed. What would make this site better for you? Also, I don’t want to stop updating just because the season is over. I can’t do personal forecasts for everyone but what would you like to see discussed or posted here during the off season? Please this is more your site than mine. I welcome all ideas.

FORECAST UPDATE Saturday 2 AM EST:

Rain was a problem for NASCAR at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Friday but it looks like Saturday and Sunday could be a little better. I am not going to keep rain totally out of the forecast but there will be more dry time than wet in my professional opinion.

Few scattered showers are possible during the morning hours Saturday. This would not be good for the Sprint Cup drivers as they are making up Friday’s schedule Saturday morning. The good news is the likelihood of these scattered showers decreases after 7am EST in the morning.

Although there could be a slight chance of an isolated shower or two, the rest of the weekend, the threat of showers like Friday are less and less. The weekend forecast for both Saturday and Sunday feature sunshine and clouds and an isolated shower or two with highs near 80…

11:30 AM UPDATE: Radar showing showers to the south of Phoenix International Raceway. It looks impressive but it has been falling apart as it moves north over some of the mountains and terrain. Few of these showers will make there way farther north and could impact the track this morning. The race is scheduled for 1pm MT (3pm ET) and there could be a slight rain delay because of the weather.

It appears the storm system is tracking farther north than what was expected. This has allowed for more moisture and rain to spread farther north and become more wide spread than originally thought. Will keep you updated here and on Twitter,  @NASCAR_WXMAN.

SUNDAY
NOV 13
Mostly cloudy, scattered morning showers. Isolated shower possible in the afternoon but mostly dry
High: 68
Low: 55

FORECAST UPDATE SUNDAY 6AM ET:
Scattered showers remain in the forecast for Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday. Storm system is expected to move through northwest Mexico on Sunday. Most of the showers will be south of the Phoenix area along the Arizona, Mexico border. There will be a few scattered rain showers during Sunday morning but I expect most of the afternoon to be dry as the morning activity moves east and south of the race track. Worst case scenario for Sunday afternoon is if a isolated shower moves over the track causing a yellow-flag caution or maybe a brief red flag. Skies will be cloudy, and temperatures will be cooler as highs only reach the upper 60s to near 70.

SUNDAY:
3  p.m ET
Sprint Cup Race – Mostly cloudy, cooler, possible shower – temp: 68

FORECAST UPDATE SATURDAY 3:30 PM ET:
Rain is in the forecast Sunday for Phoenix International Raceway but the threat is for isolated to scattered light rain. Storm system will pass by to the south through northern Mexico. The bulk of the rain is expected to fall along the Mexico Arizona border but a few showers could develop and fall over the track during the afternoon Sunday.

I don’t expect the rain to be a problem on Sunday. If a shower does occur it may cause a yellow flag caution or worst case a brief delay but I don’t see this being postponed until Monday.

FORECAST UPDATE FRIDAY 2 AM ET:
Still expecting an upper level storm system to move in from the Pacific on Friday and then move south of Arizona Saturday and Sunday. With each run of the forecast models the system is farther and farther south. This is good news for NASCAR, because it takes most of the energy and rain threat farther south too.

Friday and Saturday should be fair with partly to mostly cloudy skies and highs in the mid to low 70s. There is a small chance of a shower on Sunday but it doesn’t appear to be a major concern. At worst a stray shower or two that result in a brief caution but other than that, mostly cloudy skies and cooler with highs in the mid to upper 60s.

FORECAST UPDATE THURSDAY 4 AM ET:
Rain is not a sure thing this weekend but it is very possible at Phoenix International Raceway this weekend. Storm system will move off the Pacific across the Baja Peninsula and northern Mexico later this weekend. The good news is this storm looks to stay to the south so it won’t be a strong storm for Arizona. The bad news is it allows for sub-tropical moisture to be pulled north by this storm increasing the threat of rain Saturday night into Sunday.

Models right now are not in agreement on what to do with the moisture and possible showers. One forecast model keeps the bulk of the energy and showers to the south along the Arizona/ Mexico border. Another has lot of moisture across the state Saturday into Sunday. At this point I am not thinking a washout, but expect the forecast to change as better information becomes available. If you’re planning on going to the race I’d plan on the possibility of showers, maybe have a backup plan (just in case), but overall I am thinking (as of now) we get this race in on Sunday.
