RICHMOND NASCAR RACE DAY WEATHER FORECAST

2012 NASCAR At Richmond International Raceway Race Day Weather Forecast: Can We Race Tonight?

1

First half of the day will be partly sunny, very warm and humid with afternoon high temperatures expected to reach near 90. A strong cold front will push across Virginia during the day bringing with it showers and storms. It is expected to arrive in Richmond between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. with a line of strong storms and showers. This is obviously a problem because the NASCAR Sprint Cup race is scheduled for around 7:30 p.m. EDT.

The image above is just one of the computer models I like to look at when putting together a forecast. This is from Friday night for 8 p.m. tonight. I’ve marked Richmond on the map and as you can see it has the main line of storms to the east of Richmond and the track, but lighter more scattered showers remain behind around the city of Richmond

Here is another model for the same time 8 p.m. tonight, both of these models have been consistent keeping rain near or over Richmond around the time the race is scheduled to start.

As if the worry of rain delaying or even postponing tonight’s NASCAR race wasn’t enough, the Storm Prediction Center continue to have Richmond International Speedway in a slight risk for severe weather. The main threat with the line of storms expected later today and tonight is gusty damaging winds. Lightning would also be a big concern with all those fans out camping and tailgating before the start of the race.

Do we race tonight?  My gut is telling me that it will be very difficult to get this race in tonight but it’s possible. A lot has to go NASCAR’s way in order for us to see racing tonight. The rain and storms have to arrive as early as possible (between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.) and clear out quickly giving crews plenty of time to dry the track with no more rain to follow.

The other question is if the rain clears out and they get the track dried by 10 p.m. or 11 p.m. would NASCAR still race that late? It’s a tough call so please follow me on Twitter @NASCAR_WXMAN and like me on Facebook for the latest weather updates because things could change quickly later today.

If the race is postponed until Sunday, the weather forecast is perfect. Lots of sunshine, cooler temperatures with highs near 80 and less humidity. Although not certain, in the past if a night race was moved to the next day NASCAR typically started it around noon or 1 p.m. EDT.

2012 Richmond International Raceway NASCAR Race Day Weather Forecast: Midday Update

0

FORECAST UPDATE SATURDAY 12 p.m. EDT (4/28/2012):

So you’ve looked at the radar today and you’ve started to get worried about tonight’s Sprint Cup Series Race at Richmond International Raceway. Expect a few light rain showers to move throught Richmond later this afternoon. The rain will be light but enough to clean off any rubber that was put down from last night’s Nationwide series race. This area of light rain should diminish and end between 4 and 5 p.m. EDT

Once the rain ends this should provide plenty of time to dry the track and get it ready for the scheduled green flag later tonight. I expect the start of the race to be cloudy but dry and temperatures near 60, but as the race goes on the chance of rain increases through the evening.

I tweeted that I think we have at least a 60 to 70 percent probability of getting an official race (geting to the half way point). There is a chance we can get the whole race in but with the chance of rain showers increasing into the overnight the odds start to decrease.

A lot of this will depend on the rain across the Ohio River Valley. Will it follow the same path as the rain this afternoon? Will it break up or stay farther north? Also what about the rain we don’t see yet, the rain that has yet to form? A lot of time it comes down to the rain you don’t see that you have to be the most concerned about. Will have more updates later this evening.

2012 Richmond International Raceway NASCAR Race Day Weather Forecast: Chance of Showers Tonight

0

FORECAST UPDATE SATURDAY 4 a.m. EDT (4/28/2012):

Will it rain Saturday night for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Richmond International Raceway Saturday night? That’s what everyone wants to know unfortunately the answer isn’t a straight forward yes or no.

It all comes down to placement of a stalled boundary to the north of Virginia and the timing of a system that will ride along this boundary Saturday afternoon and evening. Expect the day to start off dry with sunshine. As the day wears on more clouds are likely and there could even be a few showers that develop. If any rain does form in the afternoon it would be isolated to scattered.

Rain chance begin to increase as we go into the evening. It appears we should be mostly dry and mostly cloudy as we start the Capital City 400. As the evening goes on and we get later into the race the rain chances begin to increase.

Until we see when and where the rain will form it’s a tough call on whether or not we will get the full 400 miles completed. As I have been telling many of my followers on Twitter if I had tickets to tonight’s race and knowing what I do about the weather and this forecast, I would still go expected to see racing Saturday night.

As far as rain postponing the race until Sunday, the odds of that look low. I would expect it to be in the 20 to 30 percent probability, with a good 70 percent probability we see at least an official race Saturday night.

2012 Richmond International Raceway NASCAR Weather Forecast: Saturday Night Showers?

0

FORECAST UPDATE FRIDAY 2 a.m. EDT (4/27/2012):

Weather will be quiet for Friday’s NASCAR actitivies at Richmond International Raceway. It is Saturday and Saturday night when things get tricky. Cold front stalls south in the Carolinas on Friday. This will allow for high pressure to move in and provide mostly sunny skies to the region. It should also remain dry for Friday night’s Nationwide Series race.

Saturday’s forecast becomes more problematic as the same front that stalls across the Carolinas moves back north as a warm front then stalls. The challenge and question becomes where does this front stall.  It appears that it will be close enough that showers will be a threat at anytime during the day and evening on Saturday. It doesn’t appear that it will be a large wave of rain but more the threat of scattered hit or miss type showers. I don’t think it will be a rain out, at least I hope not but showers and radar will need to be watched Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening.

2012 Richmond International Raceway NASCAR Weather Forecast: Chance Of Rain Saturday NIght

0

FORECAST UPDATE THURSDAY 6 a.m. EDT (4/26/2012):

Another NASCAR weekend and another challenging forecast. Warm front lifts to the north during the day Thursday. This will help to spread in showers and potentially thunderstorms during the afternoon. There could even be some breaks in the clouds for some sunshine that would spark storm formation in the afternoon. Off and on times of rain are possible today.

The same front that brought warm temperatures will drop south as a cold front Thursday night with more showers into early Friday morning. As the front pushes south it looks like Friday and Friday night could be relatively quiet. We may have fair and dry conditions on Friday night for the Nationwide race.

Saturday is when things get tricky. It’s timing different impulses that will ride along the stalled front to the south. Also if the front meanders a little more to the north showers and maybe a few storms could be possible Saturday and Saturday night. This will have to be watched closely because any rain Saturday night for the Sprint Cup race will be dependent on where that front is when if any of the forecasted energy arrives that rides along that stalled boundary.

So right now I am going to keep a chance of showers in the forecast. I will keep you updated over the next few days and into the weekend.

FORECAST UPDATE FRIDAY 3 PM EDT:
Overall this is a great forecast but there is the smallest risk for an isolated storm or two Friday and Saturday afternoon and evening. I don’t see this as a concern and doubt there will be an issue but if one forms near or over the track don’t be surprised.

Otherwise it will be dry, warm and a little humid. Highs Saturday will be in the upper 80s, so have plenty of water around while out at the track. For both the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Race temps will be near the mid 70s and starting off near 80 Saturday night. Detailed forecast below.

FORECAST UPDATE Thursday 12 PM EDT:
The rain over the past couple of days associated with a stalled front and cut off upper level low will finally get moving thanks to Katia making a turn to the northeast and back out to see. With just the threat of a few lingering isolated showers on Friday morning the rest of the forecast looks dry. One could say we finally got the rain out of the way early so we can have a dry race weekend.

By the afternoon Friday we should see some clearing and be dry for qualifying and the Nationwide race with Saturday looking even better with no threat of rain and highs in the upper 80s.

FORECAST UPDATE Tuesday 3 PM EDT:
The same cold front that kept drizzle around Atlanta Motor Speedway Tuesday will stall along the Mid-Atlantic coast the next several days giving Richmond International Raceway a chance of showers and storms for the remainder of the week. The best days for rain are Wednesday and Thursday with Friday and the Nationwide race seeing just a small threat of an isolated shower or storm.

Hurricane Katia is expected to stay well east of the eastern coast of the United States as it turns north well before it reaches the coast. This will not be a threat for the weekend race in Richmond. Going into the weekend it looks like the threat of showers and storms become almost non existent and we currently look dry for the Saturday night race.
