FORECAST UPDATE SUNDAY 9 AM MDT:

I continue to monitor the weather situation through central and eastern Pennsylvania. As of 11am EDT, there were a few isolated showers and storms through central PA moving east, some appeared to become more scattered through western Pennsylvania as a cold front prepares to work across the state later this afternoon. Thankfully the activity is scattered and isolated with lots of breaks in between the negative is how “juiced” the atmosphere is. Lot of available moisture to develop more showers and storms as the day wears on. I don’t think that the race is a wash but I will feel a whole lot better if we make it to half way and can at least say we have an official race.

SUNDAY:
1:00 p.m EDT
Sprint Cup Race – Mostly cloudy, scattered showers and storms – temp: 78
3:00 p.m EDT
Sprint Cup Race – Mostly cloudy, possible shower or storm – temp: 78
5:00 p.m EDT
Sprint Cup Race – Mostly cloudy, possible shower or storm – temp: 79

Sunday’s Sunset at 8:11pm EDT

MONDAY: (Just in case the race is postponed or moved to the next day)
12:00 p.m EDT
Possible Sprint Cup Race – Partly Sunny, isolated threat of showers, looks mostly dry – temp: 78

FORECAST UPDATE SUNDAY 12 AM MDT:

The question everyone wants to know, “Will we be racing Sunday or will it be Monday?” Rain is definitely a threat and I don’t think there are a lot of windows, I hope I am wrong and we see a full race with perfect weather but here is why I am not real confident that we get a full race in on Sunday.

Attached you will find print outs from two computer models I use when I put together a weather forecast. Model #1 is more aggressive with the rain as you can see more of the darker shades which indicated heavier and steadier rain for Sunday afternoon around 2pm.

Model1_medium

Model #2 doesn’t have heavy rain but it is still not what you want to see as you go into the afternoon. I can tell you that both of these models keep rain around eastern Pennsylvania until evening.

Model2_medium

After looking over the date and reviewing radar data from overnight I think we have at best a 40% chance of getting a whole race in, and my gut thinks that percent is too high. The problem with rain Sunday morning into Sunday afternoon is it will come in small waves and timing these waves are tough.

Eastern Pennsylvania is in a warm moist airmass thanks to a passing warm from Saturday night, this provides enough “juice” for storms and showers to form and keep them from dying out. Also a cold front is expected to cross the area late Sunday afternoon and evening. This boundary could spark showers and storms out ahead of the front.

I can’t and won’t tell someone whether or not they should or shouldn’t go to a race. My job is to give people the best information so they can make the decision that is right for them. I will say this, if you go tomorrow be prepared for rain at some point and also know that the race could be delayed, postpone or shorten.

SUNDAY:
9:00 a.m EDT
Truck  Race – Showers and storms likely – temp: 72
1:00 p.m EDT
Sprint Cup Race – Mostly cloudy, possible shower or storm – temp: 78

MONDAY: (Just in case the race is postponed or moved to the next day)
12:00 p.m EDT
Possible Sprint Cup Race – Partly Sunny, isolated threat of showers, looks mostly dry – temp: 78

FORECAST UPDATE SATURDAY 3 AM MDT:

Good news and bad news when it comes to the weather this weekend in Pocono. There will be morning fog and as the day wears on Saturday the threat of showers and storms increases. This could put a damper on the Truck race Saturday afternoon but because qualifying for Sprint Cup is in the morning it has a better chance of getting in. The rain and storms will be more numerous Saturday night into Sunday morning. There is still a threat for storms and showers Sunday. It doesn’t look like a wash but there is still enough of a threat to be a little nervous and approach with caution.

As for Iowa Speedway, like Pocono some patchy morning fog other wise sun and clouds and not as hot

FORECAST UPDATE Thursday 4 AM MDT:

The “Tricky Triangle” features another tricky forecast. As of right now it doesn’t look good as a storm system will be crossing central Pennsylvania Saturday into Sunday. First it will lift a warm front through followed by a cold front on Sunday night. The time in between will be unsettled with showers and storms, some potentially strong. This forecast will need to be monitored. Along with the threat of storms Saturday and Sunday it will turn hot and humid on Sunday as well.

As for Iowa Speedway, the central plains will finally get a break from all the heat and steam this weekend. There could be an isolated shower or storm but in my professional opinion not enough of a concern for Nationwide activities.

FORECAST UPDATE SUNDAY 3 AM MDT (5 AM EDT)

This is a tough forecast. It seems from one run of the models to the next we keep getting a different scenario and timing but generally I go back to my original forecast that there is a good threat of rain during the race. The front seems to have stalled Saturday so it looks like it will pass more afternoon/ evening on Sunday than previously thought.

This means there will be warm and some unstable air around through the late morning and into the afternoon. If we get sunshine that will help the air to become even more unstable allowing showers and storms to develop. There could easily be windows where we get racing in and maybe long enough to get halfway or all the way. Timing and location will be key. Unfortunately with scenario it is hard to pinpoint a possible time or location for storms looking at how these storms have behaved over the last few days.

SUNDAY:
1:00 p.m EDT
5-Hour Energy 500 – Clouds some sun, possible shower or thunderstorm – temp: 72

FORECAST UPDATE FRIDAY 9:30 AM MDT (11:30 AM EDT)

As we continue to fine tune the forecast for this weekend at Pocono rain continues to be a threat but now the window looks more like Saturday into Sunday morning or midday. I still think timing of when the storms end isn’t cut in stone but most models agree rain is out by early afternoon if not sooner. This being said, if I had tickets for this Sunday’s race I’d still go, I’d just be prepared for a possible delay and make sure I have some rain gear… just in case.

So to answer some of the questions you may have: Is the race a wash and going to run on Monday? The likelihood is low, there easily could be delays if the rain doesn’t end in the morning and carries over into the early afternoon. Then that would be NASCAR decision on what they would do.

If you had to call it when will the rain end on Sunday? If I had to give a specific time I would say midday or noon. It could be earlier than that but I am being cautious, but I am starting get the feeling that they can and will get Sunday’s race in.

FORECAST UPDATE THURSDAY 11:30 AM MDT (1:30 PM EDT)

The weekend is not a wash but showers and storms threaten each day. Friday’s is not all bad with the best time for showers and storms in the evening. If I had to pick one day where the threat of showers and storms were the highest it would be Saturday. Overnight Saturday into Sunday a cold front is forecasted to cross PA and here is when some of the forecast models differ on timing. One scenario has the front through by the afternoon and mainly dry for the race. The other scenario is the cold front stalls and showers linger going into Sunday afternoon. If it does rain Monday looks like a good day.

The good news is the weekend doesn’t look like a total wash and there will be more dry time than wet it is just a matter of when we get those showers and storms. Stay Tuned.

FORECAST UPDATE Wednesday 3 AM MDT:

This is another complicated forecast for this weekend’s race at Pocono. As I look over the computer models it appears that a cold front will work through over the weekend. After the steamy weather that most of the east has experienced it will be a refreshing cool down but will also mean a threat of showers Friday night, Saturday and Sunday.

As of last check the NWS was calling for only a 30 to 40 percent chance of precipitation. Normally I don’t mention what others are forecasting or mention percent chance but I know a lot of you look at these various forecasts. Typically, when I read these kinds of numbers I would take a more optimistic point of view but the conflict is in the models. Over the last 24 hours the outlook has not improved very much, but I will tell you I am not calling for a wash and if you had plans to go to the race or were thinking about going I’d keep my plans.

I will be updating this forecast at least once a day between now and Sunday. It is very possible this forecast can and may possibly change over that time. As a fan of the sport, I hope for it to get better. Also, from my experience with Pocono races, all the times there has been rain in a forecast it seems over the last 3 years most of  the races have gotten in. Stay tuned.

FORECAST DISCUSSION Update Sunday 2 PM EDT:

After what was a 45 to 50 minute rain delay It appears most of the rain has drifted east and the worst of the storms that are forming this afternoon are well to the north and east. I am not going to give the all clear because more showers and storms could form later this afternoon to the west. I’ve started to see weak development over the last 30 minutes to the west. Will watch and update when needed.

FORECAST DISCUSSION Update Saturday 7 AM EDT:

No problems for Saturday as the forecast remains nice, comfortable with sunshine and a few clouds highs will be in the mid to upper 70s.

As we head into Sunday, the threat of rain continues as an upper level disturbance comes across Pennsylvania. This could spark scattered showers Sunday morning with the best chance of more rain showers and possible storms in the afternoon. I will say this scenario is not looking good for Sunday. The biggest challenge for Sunday is trying to determine if there will be gaps in the rain and how wide spread any showers and storms are in the afternoon. Unlike previous systems that you can track and time this system will just cause the atmosphere to be unstable and unsettled. It is now becoming a hope for the best prepare for the worst type scenario. With the data I am looking at I can’t definitively say one way or another if Sunday’s race will be a rain out but rain will be a major player come tomorrow.
