FORECAST UPDATE THURSDAY 9PM EDT (3/15/2012):

These are the toughest forecasts I do each season. We have unseasonably warm air in place with lots of low level moisture. You combine that with weak upper level disturbances moving through and we increase the threat of rain, especially in the afternoon. This pattern is more like a late spring to early summer with scattered and pop showers and storms developing in the afternoon.

The best chance for rain is Friday afternoon as a disturbance moves over eastern Tennessee. There is a high probability that Nationwide and Sprint Cup practices could get washed out along with Cup qualifying if these storms and showers become very wide spread during the midday and early afternoon. Showers and storms will continue into Friday evening.

For Saturday, rain is not as wide spread and becomes more scattered but still remains a threat. There should be plenty of dry time but what makes this forecast so challenging is you never know when or where one of these pop-up storms will form and move during the day. Storms and showers will develop during the afternoon on Saturday. Rain activity will be scattered and this is why there is an equal chance of seeing a shower as there is NOT seeing a shower over Bristol Motor Speedway. This will be a forecast that will change with every hour and minute.

Sunday the threat of rain decreases as high pressure tries to build in but isolated pop up storms are still a small threat during the afternoon. This is the best day of the three but it only takes on shower or storm to move over the track to cause delays and problems. Will have another update early Friday morning.

FORECAST UPDATE WEDNESDAY 6PM ET (3/14/2012):
Just because the forecast above shows rain and lightning doesn’t mean the entire weekend is a washout. The best chance of rain and storms looks to be Thursday into Friday. Saturday and Sunday there could be pop up to scattered showers around but there will be a lot of dry time. This doesn’t mean a shower won’t hit Bristol Motor Speedway over the weekend but the likelihood is small.

FORECAST UPDATE FRIDAY 11:30 AM ET:

Thanks to Hurricane Irene a cold front crossing the state of TN has stalled slightly and its proximity could spark an isolated shower or storm this afternoon or evening but still confident that we stay dry at Bristol Motor Speedway. This is the only impact Irene should have on the NASCAR race this weekend.

As far as the rest of the time we look good. So enjoy the nice hot summer weather.

2011 How Will Hurricane Irene Impact the NASCAR Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway?

1

Irene won’t and is not expected to have any impact on the racing this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway. This storm will be to far east and just making shore along North Carolina’s Outer Banks. There may be some breeze and maybe some clouds but Irene will not have an impact on the weather in Bristol, TN.

The above graphic shows the forecast probabilities of seeing tropical storm winds over the next 120 hours. For Bristol, TN the probability is basically 0%.

Here is the potential rain forecast for Irene. I think the farthest west the rain makes it is central VA and NC, don’t see rain making it to extreme eastern Tennessee. I will continue to update Irene’s forecast along with the race forecast as we head into the weekend. Some useful links listed below…

For those who live along the east coast, don’t take this storm lightly. You may be saying, “We hear this all the time, that this storm is different and they never do what the meteorologist and forecasters say.” Do you really want to chance that with what we know and the technology we have as forecasters to see these storms better than before. I recommend some must reads if you live along the coast or near it from North Carolina all the way up into New England… First is Thursday’s post from Dr. Jeff Masters over at Wunderground.com

Irene an extremely dangerous storm surge threat to the mid-Atlantic and New England

AccuWeather.com does a nice job of breaking down what people can expect from their location to even their city from Hurricane Irene and the weather conditions they may face.

HURRICANE IRENE:

Here are a couple of very good resources for coverage and information Hurricane Irene which is now a major hurricane (Category 3 or greater):
Wunderground Blog by Dr. Jeff Masters (I read his blog a lot during Hurricane Season) | National Hurricane Center | Skeetobite Weather | Charleston, SC Meteorologist WXBrad | AccuWeather Meteorologist Jesse Ferrell | Hurricane Spaghetti Models |

Interesting, and possible good news, as some of the models continue to turn Irene more and more out to see with just a glancing blow to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. If I am in NC or even into the Mid-Atlantic coast of New Jersey, Delaware, Long Island, NY and up into New England I would still be preparing for a hurricane.

Satellite image of Irene is starting to take on that classic hurricane look with a eye beginning to form. It will remain over prime conditions for continued strengthening and is forecasted to reach category 4 strength over the next 24 hours.

Forecast is good over the next 3 days but then differ on when it makes a turn to the north. Some models want to bring it along the coast in the Mid Atlantic while others keep the strongest of the winds off the coast over the waters as it makes a turn to the north and then northeast. It will continued to be monitored. If you live along the coast from South Carolina all the way up to Massachusetts you need to monitor and make plans and arrangements just in case.

FORECAST UPDATE TUESDAY 6:30 PM ET:

EDITORS NOTE – Forgot the Truck Race was Wednesday night so I added the forecast…

It’s early in the week but the forecast currently looks good as we head into the weekend. There is a chance of storms on Thursday but most is dry and should remain dry going into the weekend but like most forecasts expect small tweaks and changes.

The biggest question I have  been asked on Twitter is will Irene cause problems for the Saturday night race. As you can see above I have variably cloudy skies and no rain. You can get more information on Hurricane Irene from the National Hurricane Center

Most trends with Irene take it right along the coast and have it making landfall along the coast of South and North Carolinas Saturday afternoon and into Sunday morning. I don’t think the precipitation shield with this storm will make it to Bristol BUT it isn’t completely out of the question. Like I said with the forecast, “expect changes” and Irene could be a wild card in this weekend’s forecast, but honestly I think Bristol is too far west to be impacted by the storm.

To those who visit my site frequently, how interested would you be if I covered more tropical weather even when it isn’t affecting a NASCAR race? Just let me know your thoughts in my comment section.

FORECAST UPDATE SUNDAY 9 AM ET:

For the most part I say we are good for racing today, but as I have been saying all week, there is a very small possibility that an isolated shower could form during the afternoon. The risk is very low, and with the mountains that surround Bristol I feel almost certain this race will be dry.

The reason for the risk of rain is a stalled front to the south across Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. The front will move north as a warm front. There isn’t a lot of moisture for this front to work with but as it gets closer a small risk of an isolated shower exsists. If rain become a threat I will keep you updated.

FORECAST UPDATE SATURDAY 2PM ET:

It takes just a few updates on twitter to get people nervous about rain tomorrow because of a weather forecast from either the National Weather Service or even Weather.com.

I have nothing against these operations. The weather service is something I rely on, where do you think the raw data comes from to get computer models? They issue all weather advisories to protect human lives and property. I look at their forecasts but I use them as I use any other source, another opinion.

As for weather.com if you are in hurry and need a rough idea on what the weather is going to do then it can be a good source. It is fairly accurate but because I know that no human does the forecast for the site when you type in your zip code it is all done by computer model, my trust in it is not as high as other forecasts.

Then you have me, I have 10 years of experience forecasting and broadcasting the weather in many locations, my focus each weekend is the one or sometimes two sites where NASCAR is racing. Then as I put my forecast I am looking at giving all fans, those at the race and those at home the best information possible so they know what will happen. I have been wrong few times but never so wrong a race was postponed for rain after forecasted sun.

For Bristol on Sunday for the Sprint Cup race, there is a hint that an isolated shower in the afternoon but I don’t think it will be anything that causes a problem. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if there is no rain at all. There will be clouds, limited sunshine and it will be cool as highs are in the low 60s. I am not saying rain can’t happen or won’t but I feel there is a much better chance at being dry than there is of any rain.

My detailed forecast corresponding with NASCAR start times can be found at SBNation.com.

FORECAST UPDATE SATURDAY 8AM ET:

With the exception of just a few showers passing by the track this morning, the good news the rain threat has greatly diminished, there is still a threat for an isolated shower popping up especially on Saturday but with the mountains around Bristol Motor Speedway I am confident we will be mainly dry for the on track activities and races this weekend.

If you’re going to the race today or tomorrow it may not be a bad idea to have the gear handy but if I was a betting man you probably won’t need it. It’s just better safe than sorry.
