NASCAR 2013 Bristol Motor Speedway Race Day Weather Forecast

Does the NASCAR Sprint Cup series race today at Bristol Motor Speedway? Yes I believe they do, but not without the threat of a couple of rain showers and the possibility of a rain delay or two. Stall front will be draped across the Tennessee Valley today. Along and near this boundary will be scattered showers. While it is hard to know exactly when showers will form and where they will go, it appears by most forecast data that a good deal of activity takes place this morning and then becoming more broken and scattered as we go into the afternoon and evening. This give me enough confidence to say we see a race today at Bristol Motor Speedway and think the odds of seeing a complete race is 60 to 70 percent.

NASCAR 2013 at Bristol Motor Speedway Weather Forecast: Nervous About Rain this Weekend

Unlike Vegas where we got the rain out of the way early, rain could be a problem for Saturday and Sunday at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Cold front drops in from the north Saturday into Sunday and then stall over the Tennessee Valley. This will provide the focusing mechanism for the development of scattered showers both days. I don’t like the looks of this forecast but I am not calling it a wash. The odds of this being a wash at this point is about 45%. I will be tracking the rain and developing rain this weekend. Definitely feel like we will have delays Saturday and Sunday thanks to to rain. If I was going I’d still go, prepare for the worst by bringing my rain gear and hoping for the best.
The images above are the current computer models for Sunday afternoon. As you can see through eastern Tennessee there is a lot of green representing rain. Rain is definitely in the forecast and should have some impact on weekend activities. Like I said above, I am not calling this a wash but rain gear this weekend is a must

2012 NASCAR At Bristol Motor Speedway: Finally A Completely Dry Forecast

FORECAST UPDATE WEDNESDAY 6:00 a.m. EDT (8/22/2012):
Looks like NASCAR gets a break from all the drama that has been associated with Mother Nature as the Camping World Truck, Nationwide and Sprint Cups Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway.
High pressure dominates the rest of the week and into the weekend. There will be a little more moisture in the picture on Saturday and Sunday. Right now it looks dry but this forecast could change as we get closer to the weekend. As of now everything looks dry and very nice.

FORECAST UPDATE SUNDAY 11 AM EDT (3/17/2012):
As discussed in my previous forecast, we are seeing the rain beginning to break up and could see the rain come to an end across the area between noon and 1 pm. Do we race this afternoon? I say yes, and depending on when the light rain and drizzle finally ends we could race close to the scheduled time of 1 pm. If it takes longer to dry then there could be a slight delay…

2012 Bristol Motor Speedway NASCAR Race Day Weather Forecast: Morning Rain, Afternoon Racing

FORECAST UPDATE SUNDAY 5 AM EDT (3/17/2012):
Showers moved into northeast Tennessee, including Bristol Motor Speedway, early this morning. The showers were steady and light with the bulk of the rain expected to fall during the early morning hours. Steadiest of the rain should begin to come to an end between 6 am and 8 am.
By mid to late morning there could be a few lingering pockets of light rain and drizzle as drier air tries to work in behind the departing system. Midday and early afternoon most of the activity should push off to the east-northeast and begin to dry out with mostly cloudy skies and some partial clearing.
How will all of this affect the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway? I stayed up late and into the early morning hours watching this area of rain as it moved slowly into northeast Tennessee. Depending on how long it takes NASCAR to dry the track I think we still get this race in during the afternoon. I’d say it is better than 60% that we get the race started on time and better than 80% we get the race in today. I will update if anything changes this morning and afternoon.

FORECAST UPDATE SATURDAY 7:00 AM EDT (3/15/2012):
Although there are scattered showers in the forecast this weekend for Bristol Motor Speedway, the majority of the time should be dry and rain free. This doesn’t mean a shower won’t threaten and or even hit the track, it just means because the showers and storms will be scattered across the area, many could miss the track than hit it.
Best chance for widespread scattered showers and storms will be Saturday afternoon when we get into the heating of the day. Best time would be from 2 p.m. EDT until 8 p.m. EDT in the evening. Bristol has lights, but I don’t know if NASCAR would move the Nationwide race to Saturday night if showers were to delay or postpone. I guess it is always an option.
Sunday’s forecast is a little better, there’s still the possibility of some scattered showers developing in the afternoon but they don’t look to be as widespread as Saturday.
Both Saturday and Sunday will feature partly sunny skies, and very warm temperatures for mid March. High temperatures in the afternoon will be in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees.

FORECAST UPDATE FRIDAY 3:30 PM EDT (3/15/2012):
Showers have been forming through central Tennessee this afternoon. It looks like they should be able to get Sprint Cup qualifying in, but the K&N Pro Series East race later this evening could be dealing with some rain.
Forecast overall is relatively unchanged. There will be dry time along with the threat of scattered showers and storms in the afternoon. The best chance for rain appears to be Saturday. Similar to what we saw today but as you may have noticed rain was NOT a factor in practice or qualifying. In the afternoon on Saturday, scattered showers and storms are expected to form, the question is when and where. If they form all around Bristol Motor Speedway and don’t hit the track then that is a win for NASCAR. Just keep in mind it only takes one lone shower or storm to move over the track to cause problems and delays.
For Sunday, the forecast is a little better. Isolated and scattered showers or storms are still possible in the afternoon. I will need to keep an eye on the radar through out the race but I feel like NASCAR should be able to get the Food City 500 in on Sunday.

FORECAST UPDATE THURSDAY 9PM EDT (3/15/2012):
These are the toughest forecasts I do each season. We have unseasonably warm air in place with lots of low level moisture. You combine that with weak upper level disturbances moving through and we increase the threat of rain, especially in the afternoon. This pattern is more like a late spring to early summer with scattered and pop showers and storms developing in the afternoon.
The best chance for rain is Friday afternoon as a disturbance moves over eastern Tennessee. There is a high probability that Nationwide and Sprint Cup practices could get washed out along with Cup qualifying if these storms and showers become very wide spread during the midday and early afternoon. Showers and storms will continue into Friday evening.
For Saturday, rain is not as wide spread and becomes more scattered but still remains a threat. There should be plenty of dry time but what makes this forecast so challenging is you never know when or where one of these pop-up storms will form and move during the day. Storms and showers will develop during the afternoon on Saturday. Rain activity will be scattered and this is why there is an equal chance of seeing a shower as there is NOT seeing a shower over Bristol Motor Speedway. This will be a forecast that will change with every hour and minute.
Sunday the threat of rain decreases as high pressure tries to build in but isolated pop up storms are still a small threat during the afternoon. This is the best day of the three but it only takes on shower or storm to move over the track to cause delays and problems. Will have another update early Friday morning.
